"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of beauty is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, but indifference between life and death." The TEDx Talk by JD Russo spoke strongly to me in regards to my upcoming journey in my mentorship. Throughout the duration of the video, Russo brings into point the main issue of society these days – indifference. Now more than ever, people have the tendency to be indifferent to the events occurring around them. Whether it be due to the fact that the age of technology has overwhelmed our minds or just plain human nature, we continue to be numb to the action that is required to learn something new.
My upcoming journey in my mentorship is not something that I should have indifference to. Taking part in the Honor's Mentorship Program is not something that should be taken for granted. It is an opportunity that only a select few have, and to be one of those select is an honor. JD Russo brought up the fact that when most of us are presented with new information, we tend to not make connections between the resulting actions. Throughout this year in my mentorship, I have full intentions on making connections between what I learn and the actions following such. What I learn throughout the mentorship will be applied to real-life circumstances in my life. I want to take away something from this experience other than just another thing to write down on a college application or resume. I am incredibly passionate about conserving the environment (which proves why a career in environmental engineering is fitting for someone like myself). Throughout my life I've tried to make sure that I contribute as much as I possibly can to help preserve the world's environment - I recycle more than I throw away garbage, I only use reusable bags at grocery stores, I make sure to turn out the lights in my house when they're not being used, and I clean up every piece of litter I see in nature. However, my aspirations to help the environment around me don't reach everyone. It's difficult to get others involved when they're indifferent to change. However, after watching JD Russo's TEDx Talk, I've learned that in order to make a change in the world, you need to have a little hope. A small amount of hope sparks the change in others. By showing the people around me how passionate I am about conserving the environment, I am able to make a difference. My goal is that, one day, everyone will not only know about the importance of conserving the environment, but also do something about it.
